Abstract:Consumer spending continues to weaken, raising fears that the economic recovery is over so far as consumers are concerned. In this review we outline the prospects for consumer spending over the next two to three years, as well as considering longer term trends. We discount the possibility that consumer spending will fall this year in volume terms, although we do expect only weak growth. Prospects for 1996 are brighter, with tax cuts in the offing. The outlook for the following five to ten years is for average growth of 2-3% a year.
