Abstract:This article discusses the nature, extent, and significance of allotment provision and cultivation in early nineteenth-century southern England. Allotments were small pieces of land rented by laboring families who used them for labour-intensive cultivation, mostly of potatoes. Provision of allotments was inhibited by the widespread antipathy of farmers. The article argues that hostility both to allotments and to rights of common can be explained by an efficiency wage model.
