| Abstract: | In this review the prospects for consumer spending over the next two to three years are outlined. In addition, the authors take a longer term view by considering probable growth patterns in consumption over the next ten years to the year 2005. Consumer spending recovered in the second quarter of this year, although it remains weak as a consequence of low employment growth and the effect of tax rises. The sluggishness of private consumption has been at the heart of the recent slowdown in the UK economy. However, the prospects for consumer spending are more encouraging. |
