| Abstract: | Consumer spending has shown some signs of improvement after having been weakened by low employment growth and the effect of tax rises. In this review the authors outline the prospects for consumer spending over the next two to three years. In addition, the authors take a longer term view by considering probable growth patterns in consumption over the next ten years to the 2005. The sluggishness of private consumption has been at the heart of the recent slowdown in the UK economy but the latest quarterly national accounts figures suggest that consumer spending is currently a crucial contributor to growth. |
