Abstract:In this review, we outline the prospects for consumer spending over the next two to three years. In addition, we take a longer-term view by considering probable growth patterns in consumption over the next ten years to 2005. Consumer spending played an important part in sustaining the recovery in 1995, despite the effect of tax rises, expanding by 2.0 per cent at constant prices last year, slightly below the 2.6 per cent that was recorded for 1994. Evidence suggests that consumer spending developments have been more favourable so far in 1996, helped by the rises in personal disposable incomes, which were boosted by cuts in income tax which came into effect in April.
