Abstract:This article outlines the prospects for consumer spending over the next two to three years, and takes a longer term view by considering probable growth patterns in consumption to year 2005. Consumer spending is set to be a driving force behind economic activity in 1997, with growth about 4.5% expected. This follows healthy growth in 1996, when private consumption played a key role in supporting the economy. An upturn in expenditure is now being seen in areas which had been previously suffering.
