Abstract:This article outlines the prospects for consumer spending over the next 2-3 years, and takes a longer-term view by considering probable growth patterns in consumption to 2005. Consumer spending was a key factor supporting the economy last year assisted by rises in household disposable incomes boosted by income tax cuts. The outlook for consumer spending in 1997 remains promising. Consumer spending will grow by over 4% in 1997. Thus private consumption is set to be a driving force behind economy in 1997, although the growth rate is still below the rates of the 1980s spending boom. The growth of consumption in the next 5-10 years is expected to average about 2-3% a year.
