Abstract: | In an effort to halt its decline, the Church of England is attempting a complete management overhaul. It has recently introduced an exacting selection system for priests, is developing its first formal grievance procedure and is soon to issue guidelines on appraisal. The author of this article asks senior Church figures how relevant such secular techniques are to a religious institution. Canon Raymond Rodger, aide to the Bishop of Lincoln, says:"We have to think in terms of exceeding customer delight. What we have to offer is the glory of God, and we have got to give the very best service to our customers in terms of added value and value for money that we can". |
