| Abstract: | Private consumption rose by around 4.6% in 1997. In the first quarter of 1998 consumer spending rose by 0.9% over the previous quarter and was 4.9% higher than a year earlier. London and the South East account for 30% of consumer spending in the UK with substantially higher spending per person than the UK average. Private consumption will rise by about 3.7% in 1998 and by 2.2% in 1999. |
