Abstract:The importance of the poor laws for the livelihood of of the rural labouring poor in late Hanoverian England can hardly be overemphasized. Their influence was not confined to the times when the poor were in actual need of financial assistance, but extended to employment, wage rate, apprenticeship, migration, housing, medical care, and even very private experiences such as marriage and illegitimacy. The laws comprehensively defined the access of the poor to the resources of society.
