| Abstract: | Against a backdrop of an ever more pluralist society, the debate surrounding citizenship in the UK has recently become more prominent. Exacerbated by the high profile given to immigration and asylum issues in both politics and the media, events such as the race riots in Oldham, Burnley and Bradford during the summer of 2001 brought this highly charged issue to the top of the national agenda. The authors provide approaches to dealing with citizenship among young people and state that before these approaches have focused largely on citizenship within the National Curriculum. This paper intends to use a research project as an illustration of two main areas: using new approaches to engage young people in research; and exploring interesting ways of tackling complex and topical subject material. |
