Abstract:This paper provides findings from research considering the interplay btw. English national policy developments in human resources management (HRM) in higher education and the personal stories of academic staff (here as: acd-s.) as career participants. Based on interviews across six case study sites with 21 academic participants, it is found that the policy issues dominating the national and institutional HRM discourse, e.g. pay and conditions of service, bargaining structures, tenure and competitiveness are not the same as those issues that academics raise. Highlighted is a found disjuncture btw. the national human resources policy discourse and the social reality of acd-s. as objects of that policy. As a result, changes are suggested.
