Abstract:The 'opportunity bursary' (hereafter as: o-b.), a new form of financial support for students from low-income families, was introduced for a limited period in England from 2001-2002. Two cohorts' surveys of o-b. applicants were performed, suggesting possible behavioural, psychological, and economic impacts. Fewer o-b. recipients than non-recipients reported that part-time work had interfered with their studies. In addition, more reported the o-b. having made them less worried about meeting the costs. There was some evidence that the scheme led to increased retention in the first year of university study. Furhermore, it also seemed to lead to lower levels of debt, especially credit card debt or bank overdrafts.
