Abstract:The economic relationship between the United States and Japan is described and analyzed. Almost 40 percent of Japan's total imports come from the USA. The Usa takes one-third of Japan's exports. The manufacturing industries of the two countries are closely related. In this situation protectionism, retaliation and trade war seems suicidal. The problem of trade imbalance is examined. The role of quality improvement of American products seems to be necessary for correction. In spite of this, USA manufacturers apparently aren't much interested in improving their competitiveness. It is described how Sony Corporation had taken steps to manufacture TV sets in the USA. The case of USA car industry is also examined.
