Abstract:In this study strategic compensation and agency theories are used to examine the impact of organizational differences in managerial compensation on employment variability. Compensation design was found to be related to employment variability in two ways: When groups of employees were covered by variable pay plans, their employment variability was lower; organizations relying heavily on long-term compensation incentives for managers exhibited less employment variability.
