Abstract:Services are sufficiently different from goods, and the international expansion of services requires somewhat distinctive strategies. Service firms prefer direct modes of entry into foreign markets, through foreign investment and acquisitions, often with a local partner. High fixed costs may deter service businesses fro entering all but the largest markets, as do government regulations seeking to favour domestic firms. These forces cause fragmentation, and senior management faces the challenge of integrating service subsidiaries so that a unified strategy can be forged and implemented.
