Abstract: | Today's portable computers are not only smaller, lighter, more powerful and infinitely more flexible than their mid-1980s precursors, but many of them also include colour screens, and some even have multimedia features such as sound and CD-ROM. As the technology has changed, so the computer's role inside many organizations has been transformed too. During the 1970s, specialist departments used mainframe computers hidden away from the main office area. In the 1980s, PCs arrived on many workers' desktops. In the 1990s, the emphasis is on mobility and flexibility. |
