Abstract:In a few years, there will be over 1 bn smart cards. They will replace cash, store medical records, clock up air miles, and build "relationships". The smart card was an idea ahead of its time. Invented during the 1970s, smart cards were initially seen as gimmicks rather than as devices with much commercial potential. But now, the smart card has come of age and is about to revolutionize the way many of us shop, bank, travel and communicate.
