Abstract: | Benchmarking, studying other firms for ideas to adopt, has become an accepted managerial practice. On the other hand, managers are advised that a "follow the leader" strategy is a risky one, and that they should seek out unique niches to fill, following strategies that are difficult to replicate. This paper reviews the literature on strategic variety and use it to develop hypotheses suggesting that the relationship between strategic variety and average industry profits is curvilinear. |
