Abstract: | Shock, horror - the compact disc is already old fashioned, and its successor is in the wings. The compact disc format has been one of the most successful products in the histories of computing and consumer electronics. According to Philips, there are more than 600m audio CD players and CD-Rom drives worldwide, with more than 10bn CDs in circulation. In 1995 there were around 70m CD-Rom drives: this figure is expected to reach 120 m in 1996. CD player and drive sales are forecast to reach 250m units in the year 2000. |
