Abstract:Just-in-time (JIT) purchasing relationships with suppliers involves close collaboration on product development and specifications, and on both product and information flows. Three questions are addressed in this research. First, does JIT purchasing affect overall organizational design? Second, does JIT purchasing have an impact on the configuration of the purchasing function? Third is JIT purchasing associated with performance? The results of an empirical study of 200 manufacturers are presented. A discussion from a managerial perspective follows.
