Abstract:The EU is losing popular support - but least so in Ireland. As the Nice treaty leaves little room for opt-outs - a second vote might simply confirm the first - unless it were combined with a general election. Without Irish support, the treaty will fall. Enlargement could still go ahead - but the road toward "ever closer union" may be blocked. The pursuit of national interests now prevails. The EU needs to refocus on popular common policies. The lessons of the Irish referendum should not be forgotten even if the treaty does manage to pass the hurdle a second time.
