| Abstract: | In this paper, the effects on earnings (henceforth as: erngs.) of 'gap years' btw. high school and university enrollment are estimated. The estimation is performed by means of standard erngs. functions extended to account for gap years and a set of control variables based on administrative Swedish data. It is found that postponement (here as: p-p.) of higher education is associated with a persistent and non-trivial erngs. penalty. The main source of the persistent penalty seems to be the loss of work experience after studies. Two years p-p. brings down the present value of lifetime erngs. by nearly one half of one year's peak earnings. |
