Abstract:This paper aims to demonstrate that a cartel does not have to be a brake on innovation - on the contrary, it may become the site of information transfer and technology exchange. The study which is presented bases on the archives of two Swiss cable manufacturers and on those of a Swiss and an international cartel (International Cable Development Corporation) from the start of the 20th century until the 1970s. The cartels studied fostered various forms of information and technology transfers: exchange of information in order to rationalize production, know-how sharing etc. Nowadays cartels are considered to be exceptions; until the 1980s their presence was more common in the world of global business.
