Abstract: | Using a state of the art 3-stage estimation technique, this paper identifies the determinants of the self-employed immigrant and native men in Germany. Based on data from the German Socioeconomic Panel 2000 (GSOEP), it is found that self-employment (here as: s-empl.) is not significantly affected by exposure to Germany or by human capital. ... While individuals are strongly pulled into s-empl. if it offers higher earnings, immigrants are additionally pushed into s-empl. when they feel discriminated. ... The earnings of s-empl. men increase with exposure to Germany, hours worked and occupational prestige and they decrease with high regional unemployment to vacancies ratios etc. |
