Abstract:The purpose of the article is to explain negative attitudes towards Muslims in the Netherlands. The study is based on survey from Social and Cultural Developments in the Netherlands (SOCON). The study applied ethic competition theory and intergroup contact theory. The article shows that the relative outgroup size induces both intergroup friendship contact as well as perceptions of ethnic threat. The results also reveal that contact with colleagues belonging to ethnic minority groups decreases negative attitudes towards Muslims.
