Abstract:Recent literature has focused upon the selection of an appropriate interest rate to incorporate in the discounting of deferred taxes. This study addresses this question from another point of view, its focus is on the application of the discount rate, not the determination of the rate. It presents examples of several approaches to discounting deferred tax payments. While present values of the deferred tax credits can easily be calculated, the analysis indicates that there are serious theoretical problems in doing so and that the resulting amounts are unlikely to have any economic meaning.
