| Abstract: | The Average Earnings Index provides a monthly indicator of earnings per head across the whole economy. In the period before the events described in this paper it was regarded as an important and timely indicator of wage pressure. The index for March 1998, published in May 1998 suggested that there had been ab acceleration in the rate of earnings growth. |
