Abstract:Many company directors consider bonuses to be their God-given right. The author states, hard-hit investors are questioning why some are earning such huge sums when their companies continue to haemorrhage cash Over recent weeks a string of companies, including Vodafone, Burberry, Prudential, Telewest, Boots, ÂÒ and Marconi, have come under fire for awarding their executives apparently excessive pay rises - or, even worse, 'rewards for failure'. Some accuse the press of blowing the issue up out of all proportion -'there is a lot of hype,' says Rob Burdett, senior consultant at remuneration specialist New Bridge Street Consultants. But the recent furor is more than the press indulging in their annual sport during the traditionally quiet 'silly season'.
