Abstract:The paper considers the topic of skill upgrading within manufacturing sector. The authors state that Sweden is an interesting case, since it is much smaller and more open than the United States and the United Kingdom and has implemented fundamentally different labour market policies than the latter two countries, which are typically held up as paragons of flexible labour markets. Nevertheless, all three countries have all experienced a shift away from unskilled towards skilled workers within the manufacturing sector. First the paper describes changes in the wage and employment shares of skilled and unskilled workers in Swedish manufacturing since the 1970s and the available explanations for these trends. Then it presents empirical model and the estimation results, respectively.
