Abstract:This article discusses executive remuneration in relation to company performance during the years 1854 to 1910 for large German joint-stock Kreditbanken. The article is based on a case study and the quantitative data of nine large banks. The use of incentive-related contracts is shown. Compared with modern times, pay-performance elasticity was high.
