Abstract:Based on data from 12 European countries and the variation across countries and over time in the minimum school leaving age's changes, this study explores the effects of the quantity of education (henceforth as: educn.) on the earnings (as: erngs) distribution (here as: dstrn). It is found that compulsory school reforms have a significant effect on educational attainment, particularly among individuals belonging to the lowest quantiles of the ability dstrn. There is also evidence that additional educn. reduces conditional wage inequality, and that educn. and ability are erngs. function substitutes.
