Abstract:A dynamic partial-equilibrium model is developed in this article. The model is used to analyze the effects of labor market institutions and learning on people and their self-employment. It is found that two groups of workers become self-employed: those who prefer self-employment to the low institutionalised wage, and those who do not qualify for it. Wage compression and learning may also cause people who start in wage employment to switch over to self-employment. Some of the predictions of the model can be verified with empirical regularities.
