Abstract:Combining insights from economics and social-psychology, this paper presents indices of e11quity that can be used for the evaluation of alternative distributions of income. The validity of these indices is investigated using an interna- tional data set. It is found that judgements regarding inco- me differences are more closely related to indices of equity than to perceptions of inequality. Furthermore, it is found that greater inequality is perceived and preferred in Western (capitalist) states than in Eastern (former commu- nist) states and that the distribution in the West is con- sidered to be more equitable than in the East.
