Abstract:This article focuses on the connection between educational attainment and economic resources. Especially, the article aims at investigating how the connection has changed over time. The rational action theory states that differences in parental economic resources are a necessary factor explaining inequality in educational attainment. As a data set, the study uses the full cohorts of Norwegians born between 1955-1984. The study finds a curvilinear pattern. Among the older cohorts, the inequality was decreasing, whereas for the younger cohorts the trend was increasing. The result is in line with the rational action perspective.
