Abstract:By focusing on the theory of problem reformulation, it is shown that it is possible to solve realistic-sized production-scheduling problems with standard mathematical programming software. In particular, it is shown that the linear programming relaxation of the models resulting from variable redefinition produces bounds equal to those that could be generated using Lagrangian relaxation or column generation models. The presented methods can be applied in any industry that schedules batch production of multiple products that compete for limited resources. The reported examples include machine fabrication and the manufacture of appliances and tyres.
