Abstract:Motivated by a fiber optics assembly line scheduling problem, a flexible manufacturing and operator scheduling model is formulated and solved. In the model, operators of different abilities are assigned to various tasks of a manufacturing system for the purpose of optimizing a throughput-mix. In mathematical terms, the decision problem is formulated as a deterministic, infinite horizon, discrete dynamic program. The solution method developed first relaxes the discreteness constraint, then the resulting linear program is solved, and finally, discreteness is recaptured by planning over time to arrive at an optimal solution.
