Abstract:The purpose of the study is to determine the best methods for ordering materials within a material requirements planning /MRP/ framework; where projected demands for purchased components are discrete and time-varying, and purchase discounts are readily available. Seven alternative discount ordering procedures are investigated to determine their relative cost performance. An experiment is designed to test these seven procedures in a multitude of environments defined by eight additional experimental factors. All factors tested in the experiment affected the performance of the discount ordering. The results suggest that the least unit cost, McLaren's order moment, the traditional discount order quantity and the optimal procedures outperform the others.
