Abstract:On April 23, 1996, the American Medical Association (AMA) called upon the nation's mutual funds to stop investing in the tobacco industry and called upon individual investors to stop patronizing mutual funds that continue to invest in tobacco. The AMA called tobacco "a ruinous and enslaving product that has brought misery, disease, anguish, and death." The AMA thinks the health risks of tobacco are so well established that it is no longer acceptable to further the sale of tobacco products in any way.
