Abstract:Tobacco is a billion dollar industry. But smoking kills. What a dilemma. In the UK alone it is estimated that children buy 100m pounds-worth of cigarettes each year, while 11% of 11 to 15 year-olds are "regular" smokers. Pity the poor tobacco marketing executive. For 40 years he was the friendly guy supplying a service: it was cool to smoke -- at the cinema it was the good guys who smoked and the atmosphere in every restaurant, train and office was thick with nicotine.
