| Abstract: | Flattening organisations and splitting centralised hierarchies can cut costs and make a business more reponsive to its customers. It also provides an opportunity to make some serious mistakes. This is particularly so in the manufacturing sector, where newly autonomous units often remain highly reliant on each other. Management's desire for independence seldom corresponds fully with the physical reality of product flow and resource assignment. This article considers the role of supply chain management in making a success of independence. |
