Abstract:This paper analyses the market for tobacco in Germany. The market as a whole is stable, with recession and health concerns having some impact on development. Cigarettes are the most important sector, accounting for 92.5% of total value sales in 1997. The total market amounted to some DM37,781.2 million in 1997, following a nominal growth of 13% and real growth of 5.2% over the 1993-1997 period. The market will only grow marginally in real value terms in the future. Sales of tobacco products are forecast to rise by 8.8% in real value terms between 1997 and 2002, reaching a total of DM41,104.8 million.
