Abstract: | Conventional wisdom fails to account for teams that cannot afford a time-consuming developmental process; it has said little about the mechanisms that enable development. Failure to understand these aspects of teamwork often leaves teams defenseless in the face of dynamic organizational events. The heroic and effective action taken by passengers and crew of United Flight 93 on 9/11 illustrates that learning, and not just development, lies at the heart of team problem solving. The authors propose that proximal team learning-the use of experience and conversation to solve problems-provides the means to achieve new levels of learning within a team. The authors show how the Flight 93 team utilized proximal team learning and how other teams, engaged in more traditional organizational problem solving, can learn from these events. |
