Abstract:This article examines the public relations and advertising strategies of Anglo-American tobacco companies since the early 1950 as health fears emerged as the primary threat to western tobacco companies. The link between cancer and smoking raised the spectres of falling consumer demand and increased regulation in an industry that had been both prosperous and relatively free of government interference.
