Abstract:Tobacco companies are eager to position themselves as good corporate citizens. This article shows how the deep distrust towards these companies has to do with the lethal nature of their products and the dubious behaviour of their representatives in recent decades. Important aspects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) theory and practice are showed to be ineffective or even counterproductive in the tobacco industry. This paper suggests to differentiate between transactional and transformational CSR arguing that tobacco firms can only operate on a transactional level.
