Abstract:Using employee survey data from a plant in which the union is not participating in the employee involvement program, hypotheses are tested about the profiles of workers who volunteered to join the program and of those who participated in it. The results show that volunteers are less active in the union, more eager for a "say" in decisions, and more attracted to voluntary and group activities. Participation in the program seems to increase workers' identification with the company and its goals.
