Abstract:Despite audacious health claims, studies showed that some of the early filters trapped tar and nicotine no more effectively than unburned tobacco did. The micronite filter contained a particularly dangerous form of asbestos. Nevertheless, the Micronite trademark is still used. Despite the high-tech type of the advertisements, the filter was made under fairly primitive conditions. The danger of asbestos was not widely publicized until around 1970. Some give the company the benefit of the doubt. Several lawsuits were filed by former workers of the manufacturers.
