Abstract:The Italian market for non-cigarette tobacco products, i.e., cigars, small cigars, pipe tobacco, rolling tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff, is considered. Sales of non-cigarette tobacco products were worth about LIT 164 billion in 1989, up over 4 percent on sales in the previous year. All principal sectors of the market are in decline as volume consumption fell a further 2.3 percent. Prices increase ahead of inflation and fail to compensate for volume decline, and in real terms the market contracted over 2 percent. The number of pipe and cigar smokers in Italy is estimated to be less than 80,000 or just 0.6 percent of smokers. Sales for cigars and other manufactured tobacco account for less than 2 percent of consumer spending.
