Abstract:One of the world's former leading manufacturers of typewriters, Smith Corona was challenged to exercise dynamic capability (hereafter as: d-cap.) due to the vanishing of its main product category. It is shown by a study of the last two decades how the company tried to change its resource base by leveraging existing resources (herein as: rscs.), creating new rscs., accessing external rscs., and releasing rscs. Using the extended case method, this study advances d-cap. theory by facing it through an empirical case. The Smith Corona case offers rich insights into the resource alteration processes by which d-cap. operates, highlighting rscs. cognition as a missing element in d-cap. theory.
