Abstract:In this paper the authors develop a concept of globalization at the micro level defined as the exposure of a productivity follower industry in one country to the productivity leader industry in another country. Globalization is measured by the intensity of contacts through trade and foreign direct investment. The authors' approach complements the more macroeconomic oriented discussion whether openness of countries spurs economic growth. The nature of globalization at the micro level will be used to understand productivity differences across industrialised countries, which can help to shed light on the following three related policy areas.
